PRODUCTS
rom the point of view of sustain-
able economic management, wood
is seen as a material with high ecologi-
cal validity. This is true of numerous
products that are produced from this re-
newable raw material. A prime example
is wood wool, which is traditionally used
in the packing industry to ensure the
safe transportation of fragile products.
Wood wool is also experiencing a re-
naissance in agriculture and the con-
struction industry: often declared dead,
this product is becoming increasingly
popular and is ʻbang on trendʼ. This is
all the more true as the conservation of
natural resources has long been built
on a broad social consensus. However,
even though there is a growing demand
for wood wool, there are hardly any
state-of-the-art machines to produce it.
Therefore, the SCHERDEL subsidiary
ZARIAN Bewegungssysteme GmbH,
which specialises in customised and
automated solutions, has developed
and constructed a machine for the pro-
duction of wood wool. This machine is
not intended for large-scale industrial
production, but rather presents an alter-
native approach: it offers farmers, forest
management companies and medium-
sized wood processing facilities a low-
cost entry into wood wool production,
utilising, for example, wood off-cuts or
waste wood to make a useful product.
Whoever believes that wood wool is
only suitable for packing and insulating
is completely mistaken. Recent years
have seen an influx of new products
made from this raw material; for in-
stance fire lighters made from wood
wool soaked in wax. Being a renewable
natural resource, wood is almost inex-
haustible in our climes. In contrast, the
number of machines suitable for pro-
ducing wood wool from pieces of wood
is relatively low. The wood wool pro-
duction plants manufactured in the mid-
dle of the 20th century are not only
technically ʻout of dateʼ but also very
rare. After the fall of the Iron Curtain,
the majority of them were sold to com-
panies in Eastern Europe, where they
are now increasingly being used. By
comparison, the excelsior machine from
ZARIAN is a leading-edge tool for the
production of small to medium quanti-
ties of wood wool. Its launch is planned
for later in the year.

New system for the production of wood wool
now available
A prototype of the new machine
was recently completed and is now
in the testing and optimisation
phase. It boasts a modular ma-
chine concept to allow the retro-
fitting of an automation solution, i.e.
the system design for smaller ca-
pacities can, if desired, be trans-
formed into an automatic perfor-
mance machine. The excelsior ma-
chine from ZARIAN will surely be-
come an all-round success. It is
definitely an excellent example of
SCHERDEL’s corporate philoso-
phy; using innovative products to
create sustainable customer bene-
fits, while taking the environment
into account.
