he SCHERDEL subsidiary Hamuel
Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG
continues to set new engineering
benchmarks with its latest development
that boasts impressive dimensions. The
brand new machine from the HSM se-
ries (High-Speed-Milling) may have a
footprint measuring 28 x 10 metres, but
size is not its only distinguishing fea-
ture, as it sets new standards in terms
of efficiency. In view of lifecycle costs,
the new HSM is top of its class with the
lowest ‘total-cost-of-ownership value’.
The machines of the HSM series are
designed according to a modular princi-
ple that guarantees a flexible approach
to individual customer needs, while the
specific standardisation of proven core
assemblies allows the optimisation of
costs. All the parts and components are
robust quality products that ensure out-
standing availability of the machine in
demanding production environments –
throughout its entire service life. The el-
ements for the portal are strongly
ribbed welded structures which ensure
the best possible damping behaviour.
Furthermore, the assemblies for the
portal as well as for the static and dy-
namic rigidity have been optimised. Op-
timum results were accordingly
achieved using complex analyses and
calculations in accordance with the fi-
nite element method (FEM). An optional
angle adjustment enables operators to
align the milling tool parallel to the ma-
chine table, resulting in the ability to
machine a vapour-tight surface at the
workpiece. If requested, the machine
comes with a fully automatic tool
changer for quick and efficient milling
tool indexing. In comparison to manual
tool changeover methods, this helps to
significantly reduce production disrup-
tion caused by machine downtime.
The newly developed flagship of the
HSM series combines high-perfor-
mance roughing with highly dynamic
finishing operations. Moreover, the ex-
cellent rigidity of the machine allows
milling with large tool lengths and high
feed and speed rates. The high speed
cutting technology integrated in the ma-
chine concept enables the use of ever
more efficient cutting materials. This re-
sults in a drastic reduction of machining
time and helps to minimise the costly
manual rework of parts by the end cus-
tomer – often a decisive factor in a
highly competitive market. The new
HSM machine from Hamuel has al-
ready proved to be a robust and flexible
all-rounder for machining steel, iron and
high-tech materials, such as titanium
and inconel.
