Innovations in mechani-
cal engineering
articularly in relation to machine
tools, the mechanical engineering
department must always be ready to
present innovations and further devel-
opments. It is only by observing these
principles that a company can be re-
garded as a market-leader in the field
of technology. For this reason Hamuel,
the SCHERDEL subsidiary based in
Meeder, is currently working on the
successor to its proven HSM series.
As a modular concept for machining
equipment with a gantry crane or in
bench-type design, in recent years the
HSM series has impressed hard-to-
please customers in the field of tool-
and mould making, particularly on
account of its reliability and quality.
For the next generation, work has
been carried out continuously on
developments aimed at increasing the
benefit for the customer still further by
means of enhanced quality, ease of
maintenance and efficiency. Now it is
possible to machine workpieces weigh-
ing 15 tonnes per table, with a travel
distance of 14 metres along the X-axis
on two independent mobile supporting
tables, with an axis positioning accura-
cy of 0.02 millimetres. To increase the
efficiency of the machining process, the
optimum spindle configuration for the
case in question can be set above the
milling-head changer: a torque of up to
4000 Nm for roughing at a low speed
and high-speed variants of up to
16,000 r.p.m. for finishing small geo-
metric components. In addition a wide
variety of straight or angular heads can
be used. Special developments were
necessary in relation to the drive mech-
anism in order to achieve a dynamic
acceleration of the considerable
weights (total weight of the machine:
approx. 150 tonnes) and, at the same
time, to optimize the rigidity of the ma-
chine.
On account of the extensive know-
how relating to CAD / CAM systems
acquired by Hamuel in connection with
the company's best seller HSTM for
turbine-blade machining, the complete
process chain in relation to metal-cut-
ting machining is at the customer's dis-
posal, with the result that Hamuel pro-
vides much more than "just" a machine.
The use of the first HSM in the Meed-
er factory also presents completely new
possibilities with regard to the machin-
ing of large components. This applies
not only to in house products but also
to customers involved in manufactur-
ing, who attach great importance to
speed, precision and economy in rela-
tion to machining. They now have a
first-class, state of-the-art machine at
their disposal.

New service centre
in Spain
Spain is the third largest au-
tomotive market in Europe. In
order to deal with current de-
liveries locally and to provide
all our customers with an
even better service, we
opened the Service Centre
Spain in May 2010. This facil-
ity, based in Barcelona, is
managed by Mr Jordi Marti.
In view of the fact that major
car manufacturers and sys-
tem suppliers are present on
the Iberian Peninsula, it is be-
coming increasingly important
to provide locally based ex-
pert advice and detailed cus-
tomer service. Here, one of
the main tasks of the new
SSC is to integrate the near-
by SCHERDEL factories in
Portugal and France with
their range of products into
the sales activities, thus pro-
viding the customers with lo-
gistical advantages. The SSC
deals with regular series de-
liveries and supports new de-
velopments, thus making an
important contribution to
SCHERDEL's main corporate
aim: customer satisfaction.
