(OFTM) has optimised the capacity of
its production lines by installing a new
conveying, loading and unloading sys-
tem. This involved extending the
premises by 1,100 square metres and
adding a new hall as well as a connect-
ing passage to the existing production
plant. SCHERDEL also considered the
principles of Industry 4.0 during the pre-
liminary design phase. The investments
improve the ergonomics of operational
procedures, ensure continuous produc-
tion and guarantee a clear overview of
all processes within the company.

The two large coating installations at
OFTM, frequently reported on by

, require a high level
of preparation in terms of feeding, as
the broad spectrum of customers re-
sults in a diverse range of products. It
was therefore absolutely necessary to
link the new conveying system to the
central production data acquisition sys-
tem through an intelligent network to
achieve optimum loading and unloading
processes.
SCHERDEL has thus responded to
the increasing demand for high-quality
surface coatings with clearly defined
physical properties. These range from
pure corrosion protection and resis-
tance to acids and alkalis to optimising
component properties – for example by
reducing frictional resistance. A very
precise and consistently reproducible
finish is obtained even for intricate com-
ponents, as the two coating installa-
tions, despite the high degree of flexibil-
ity, guarantee the highest quality across
the entire product range.
The large coating installations have
now been equipped with the intelligent
conveying system to align production
perfectly to the ‘Build to Order’ princi-
ple. The loading of racks with uncoated
components still takes place manually
in the new facility, as ultimately it is the
position of the parts on the carrier that
determines the finished product quality.
The knowledge and expertise of staff
cannot be replaced by automated pro-
cedures at this point. Moreover, the
enormous range of products and the
ever changing quantities for small and
large batches would not justify such a
large investment. The new facility also
houses various cleaning and shot peen-
ing systems intended for preparing sur-
faces for coating.
The topic of automation plays a key
role for the downstream processes. Us-
