ecent investments in machinery at
the SCHERDEL subsidiary FWM
Metalltechnik GmbH in Marienberg
have focussed on greater customer val-
ue, improved quality and increased pro-
ductivity. The construction of an addi-
tional austempering installation, for in-
stance, has brought this special hard-
ening process, which is commonly
used in process engineering, up to
scratch. The SCHERDEL
Group
is
therefore able to produce hard surfaces
with a tough core, while case harden-
ing ensures, especially for the automo-
tive engineering sector, lightweight yet
incredibly robust components for use
under the harshest conditions.
SCHERDEL can now respond com-
petitively to the ever changing market
trends and, for example, increase pro-
duction capacities very quickly to deal
with urgent customer requests in record
time. Furthermore, the second system
in Marienberg represents an enhanced
level of redundancy should one of the
systems be inactivated for servicing.
A highlight of the new austempering
installation is the applied hardening
process. In contrast to conventional
heat treatments, the components are
quenched in a high-temperature bath of
molten salt after tempering. The part is
held in the bath for long enough to
transform the structure into bainite, the
so-called intermediate stage structure,
which has a slender, needle-like char-
acter. The components have higher im-
pact and fatigue strengths and in-
creased wear resistance, whilst retain-
ing the desired spring characteristics
for their intended purpose. Customers
therefore profit from the longer service
life of the parts. Further, the system
can be used to regulate the amount of
carbon introduced into the surface of
components. When tempering low car-
bon steels, the hardness increases at
the surface while the core remains soft.
SCHERDEL is thus contributing further
to the production of fuel-efficient vehi-
cles by reducing their overall weight
through the use of lightweight compo-
nents. The company, as an expert for
metalworking and surface finishing, can
apply this premise to the complete sat-
isfaction of its customers. It is also
worth mentioning that SCHERDEL will
soon be investing in the modernisation
