Forward-looking business strategy leads to diversifi
Medical engineering contin
at SCHERDEL
uo vadis – where are you going?
This is the crucial question facing
entrepreneurs when drawing up plans
for the future. Because at the end of
the day, a long-term strategy that plans
for the markets of tomorrow is ab-
solutely essential for the success of
any company. Way back at the turn of
the millennium, the SCHERDEL
Group
Managing Director, Walter Bach, de-
vised a long-term perspective to ensure
the Group remains fit for purpose well
into the 21st century. An example of
this forward-looking business policy is
the development of the medical engi-
neering division. You would be quite
wrong to believe that SCHERDEL was
forced to enter into new markets as a
result of the crisis in the automotive
sector in 2009. The Group implement-
ed the idea of “medical engineering” as
a new field of activity almost ten years
ago in 2005. Even at that time, the
General Management realised there is
a limit to how far private transport can
grow and that business in the automo-
tive industry could also stagnate at
some stage. Increased activity in new
business areas was planned to coun-
terbalance these factors in the mid and
long term. The farsightedness of Walter
Bach is exemplified by his strategic
plans to place relevant developments
and the required product solutions for
medical engineering in the market by
the year 2030. The power of the
SCHERDEL
Group
and the outstanding
commitment of the workforce ensure
that this goal will most probably be
achieved by the end of the current
decade.
Thanks, not least, to its extensive ac-
tivities in basic research, SCHERDEL
ticks all the boxes in the field of forming
technology in order to explore new av-
enues and develop innovative prod-
ucts. Fundamental knowledge about
materials and their possible processing,
combined with the know-how of which
materials provide the greatest benefits
under which application conditions and
which, in terms of production, is the
most cost efficient way to proceed,
make the Group an excellent partner
for medical engineering customers.
Over many decades, SCHERDEL has
not simply devoted its attention to
meeting the high quality standards in
automotive engineering, it has also
played a key role in setting them. In
this sense, medical engineering de-
mands even more effort – because,
when all is said and done, human lives
depend on the reliable performance of
the products. Specific standards gov-
erned by GMP guidelines take these is-
sues into account. This is the reason
why SCHERDEL is currently investing
heavily in new production technology,
clean rooms, quality assurance and the
formation of organisational structures
and systems, to name just a few
examples. The Group has long
since launched its own company,
SCHERDEL Medtec GmbH & Co. KG,
to provide medical engineering cus-
tomers with comprehensive advice and
support. It is from here that sales and
development activities as well as the
industrialisation of projects will be ini-
tialised.
The first SCHERDEL products are al-
ready in use in various medical applica-
tions. Last year, the company supplied
millions of springs to ensure the safety
of drug delivery systems or for compo-
nents applied during colonoscopy. The
growing portfolio of the Group also in-
cludes components for mechanical
ventilators and electromechanical
